Store Spotlight: space519
Chicago’s space519 is defined as a general store whose refinement encompasses everything from vintage furniture and tasty cookbooks to designer apparel and top quality beauty products. Among the Alexis Bittar jewelry and quirky Waylande Gregory Ceramics lies rms beauty’s line of organic goodies. So the question remains: Why exactly did owners Jim Wetzel and Lance Lawson decide to add rms beauty to their anything-but-general store?
What drew you to the rms beauty line?
JW: When putting together our apothecary assortment at space519 there were two factors that were very important to me: pretty and healthy. At times it is hard to find both in a cosmetic line, but Rose-Marie nailed it. I loved the ease of the application (fingers), the colors (gorgeous & rich) and the presentation (modern). For me, this was the whole package: having an organic cosmetic line that was relevant and beautiful.
What’s your favorite all-time product (it can be anything–not just cosmetic!) and favorite rms beauty product?
JW: Favorite product? So hard!! I am newly in love with Rahua Volume Hair Shampoo. An organic shampoo and conditioner that, according to my hair stylist, has increased the growth and thickness of my hair. Who doesn’t want that?!?
My favorite rms product just took a turn. I LOVE the new karma eye shadow. Being in the midst of Fashion Weeks, it looks like Fall 2012 is tough, sexy and a bit harder, so karma is SO on the point for a smoky, sultry eye. The satin texture is unbelievable and so easy to work with. Just to be fair, solar is a close second, especially going into summer, it creates a killer glam lid.
Any current obsession?
JW: At space519 we are like a modern, urban general store carrying apothecary, ready to wear, accessories and home, so I have many irons in the fire. Right now I am OBSESSED with a new handbag line called Brachfeld Parlaghy. Designed in New York, this line has hobos and cross-bodies that are done in sick leathers that are detailed with tough straps, uber-cool gunmetal hardware and a dark lux look. Amazing. And anything Kimberly Ovitz…
How did the idea strike you to create a “general store?” What sets your store apart from others?
JW: When plotting the course for space519, the overlying theme was emotion. When you go into a store you want to be tempted, inquisitive and excited. The rush of finding something that is special, something that turns you on, something gets your blood pumping. We were finding that shopping had gotten a bit stale and safe in the later years, and that is exactly what we did NOT want to be. Our mantra is simple: shopping should be FUN!
